Data centers making their own power, $8 billion in harvest fuel relief, and a warning to Europe, Oct 19-21

· Covfefe Desk · data-centers, electricity, utilities, agriculture, diesel, europe, nato, weekly-recap

This note picks up after the Oct 16 to Oct 19 recap and covers posts from Monday evening, Oct 19 (Pacific), through early Wednesday, Oct 21 UTC. Much of the feed was clips and screenshots from a rally near Wichita, Kansas, along with early voting reminders for Ohio, North Carolina, Maine, and Iowa. Three items carried most of the policy and business detail: a late Tuesday post on data centers and electricity, screenshots about an $8 billion fuel relief program for farmers, and screenshots of rally remarks about Europe.

Data centers told to make their own electricity (Tuesday night, Oct 20)

At 05:37 UTC on Wednesday (10:37 PM Pacific on Tuesday), a text post laid out a position on new data centers:

As the President of the United States, I have been watching Data Centers very closely, and have come to a very strong conclusion. New and large, in some cases gigantic, Data enters are mandated by me to make their own electricity, and give or sell any excess back to the local community, or grid, and therefore there is electric price increase. In fact, there could be a substantial decrease. Other elements likewise! If companies want to make their Data Centers popular, pay the community, and/or individuals within the community, a “dividend.” I have watched the process closely, and Data Centers that were highly unpopular in a certain area, have become extremely popular when a financial deal is struck. MAKE DEALS, and get them built!!! GREAT FOR THE U.S.A. President DJT

Covfefe's automated relevance score for this item was 7, tied for the highest in this window. It was tagged with the technology, utilities, and energy sectors.

The post describes two ideas. The first is that new large data centers generate their own power and give or sell surplus electricity to the local community or the grid. The second is that companies pay a "dividend" to the community or to individuals in it. The post says these are "mandated by me" but does not name an executive order, an agency, a rule, a start date, or which projects count as "New and large." As written, it also says "therefore there is electric price increase," followed by "In fact, there could be a substantial decrease," so readers may want to wait for any formal text before drawing conclusions about how it would apply.

$8 billion in harvest fuel relief for farmers (Monday night, Oct 19)

Between 04:43 and 04:44 UTC on Tuesday (9:43 to 9:44 PM Pacific on Monday), three image posts shared screenshots from other accounts about a new farm program announced at the Kansas rally. The posts had no text of their own. The highest of the three had a relevance score of 5, with the agriculture sector tagged.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture published the details the same day. According to the USDA press release, the Harvest Fuel Relief program will make $8 billion available for one-time payments to farmers this harvest season "to provide relief during temporary market disruptions and increased input costs." The release says:

  • Payments will use a uniform formula based on Farm Service Agency planted acres, Economic Research Service cost of production estimates, and World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates yields and prices, rather than individual fuel receipts.
  • The money is authorized under the Commodity Credit Corporation Charter Act and will be run by the Farm Service Agency.
  • Payment rates for Title I commodities are due in November, and the method for other commodities will come later.
  • Crop insurance is not required to take part.

Reuters reported that the announcement came during the rally in Park City, Kansas, on Monday night. The program follows Sunday's post, covered in the last recap, that linked Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries to diesel costs for "Farmers, ranchers, and businesses of all kinds."

Remarks about leaving Europe (Monday night, Oct 19)

At 04:32 and 04:39 UTC on Tuesday (9:32 and 9:39 PM Pacific on Monday), two more image posts shared screenshots of other accounts quoting the rally remarks on Europe and NATO. The 04:32 item had a relevance score of 7, with the defense sector and the United States, the European Union, and Iran tagged.

According to a published transcript of the Wichita rally, the remarks included this passage:

But if they don’t soon find their way, and they have to find their way, we will have no choice but to leave. We will have no choice. It’s a very serious situation.

GB News noted that NATO was not named directly in the line about leaving, though the speech went on to discuss NATO allies and the request for help in Iran. No formal step on U.S. forces or alliance membership was described in the posts.

What to watch

The data center post is the item with the most open questions for utilities, grid operators, and companies building large facilities. Any written order or agency guidance would show who is covered and when. For farmers, the next fixed date in the USDA release is the November publication of Title I payment rates.
