Iran talks and a pre-midterm pause, a gasoline remark clarified, and two oil charts, Oct 7-9

· Covfefe Desk · iran, oil, energy, gasoline, hormuz, weekly-recap

This note picks up after the Oct 5 and Oct 6 recap and covers Wednesday through Friday morning UTC (Oct 7 to Oct 9). Most of the feed in that stretch was endorsements, rally clips, and article links. The items that stood out on Covfefe's automated relevance score were about Iran, oil, and gasoline.

Iran talks and a pause on attacks before the midterms (Thursday, Oct 8)

At 16:17 UTC on Thursday (9:17 AM Pacific), a post said:

We are having productive discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran. I want to make it clear to everybody that, while Iran is in very bad condition, both Economically and Militarily, and while the Blockade will remain in full force and effect, with Oil flowing in Record Numbers of Barrels through the Hormuz Strait (22 Million Barrels, last night alone, with not one barrel coming from, or going to, Iran!), we will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections to be held in the United States on November 3rd. IRAN WILL NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Covfefe's automated relevance score for this item was 7. The post makes four separate statements: talks with Iran are under way, the blockade stays in place, 22 million barrels moved through the Strait of Hormuz "last night alone," and no attack on Iran will happen before Nov 3. It did not say who is taking part in the talks, where they are held, or what the 22 million barrel figure measures. The figures are as stated in the post; this recap has not checked them against shipping or government data.

A clarification about gasoline prices (Thursday, Oct 8)

At 18:59 UTC on Thursday (11:59 AM Pacific), a post responded to news coverage of an earlier remark:

The Fake and Artificial News is out there trying to say that I’m inviting the enemy to bomb San Diego and Los Angeles when, in actuality, what I was talking about was that a temporary increase in the price of Gasoline is a small price to pay for Iran not having a Nuclear Weapon and, if you want to see a big price, can you imagine what it would be like if they bombed San Diego and/or Los Angeles? All I was doing was making a comparison between paying a little more, for a short time, for Gasoline, versus the bombing of our Major Cities. Everybody knew that, the Fake News knew it as well, but they continue to go out and say that I am asking the enemy to bomb two Cities that I love. It’s totally clear what I say but, these people are Degenerates, and think they can continuously get away with Fake News! President DONALD J. TRUMP

This scored 3. It refers to an earlier remark, but the post does not quote that remark, name the outlets, or say how long the "temporary increase" in gasoline prices would last. It gives no price level. Monday's separate post on refineries and gasoline is covered in the Oct 5 and Oct 6 recap.

Two image posts about oil (Wednesday night and Thursday evening)

Two posts attached charts about crude oil and carried almost no text.

At 03:54 UTC on Thursday (8:54 PM Pacific on Wednesday), a post with an image and no caption scored 7 on Covfefe's automated relevance score. Because the post has no text, the chart is the whole message, and this recap does not restate figures read off the image. The post is here.

At 01:09 UTC on Friday (6:09 PM Pacific on Thursday), a post with a chart on days of crude oil above $100, grouped by presidential administration, carried one line of text:

The Dumocrats are Scammers. These are the real FACTS!!! President DJT

Source: Truth Social post

This scored 2. The post does not name the source of the chart's data or the price series it uses.

Also in the feed

  • Wednesday, Oct 7: a post endorsing Tom Tiffany for governor of Wisconsin said the president would be approving $17.9 million for storm and tornado damage in the state (post).
  • Thursday, Oct 8: a post said the White House considers anyone who uses the term "Artificial Intelligence" instead of "Super Intelligence" "THE ENEMY" (post). An earlier use of the "Super Intelligence" wording is covered in the Sep 30 recap.
